Be Friends with your stomach, know how it works

A person is considered healthy when there is harmony in his doshas (elements): Vata (air and space), pitta (fire and water), and Kapha (water and earth). Pitta is the dominant dosha of the summer season as it mirrors the hot and humid weather. This can cause an imbalance in your body leading to Ajirna (indigestion) causing stomach pain and other symptoms.

According to AyurvedaAgni (digestive fire) is a key factor for digestion thus responsible for good health. An inconsistent dietetic routine causes disturbed functions of Agni which in turn leads to Ajirna – the production source of Ama (toxins). This is the root cause of stomach ailments like acidity, indigestion, bloating, etc.

Therefore, we bring to you these home remedies for indigestion to help keep your stomach in order

  • Lemon and Ginger to the rescue!

Crush a medium piece of ginger with a pestle or use a grater. Squeeze it to extract the juice. Mix one tablespoon of this juice with one table spoon of lemon juice. You can have this mixture 2-3 times in a day (but not after sunset) to strengthen secure yourself from indigestion. For kids, use this remedy 1-2 times per day.

  • A belly-pack

Mix asafoetida in lukewarm water to make a thin paste.  Apply it by massaging slowly in a circular motion on your belly & naval area. Wipe it off after half an hour with a wet tissue. This will help relieve stomach pain owing to gastric, especially for newborn babies.

  • Detox with concoctions
    • Saunf (fennel seeds): Boil 1 tablespoon of saunf in two glasses of water until it reduces down to half. Sip it slowly while still lukewarm. This concoction has a cooling tendency so it is to be avoided if you have a cough or cold.
    • Jeera (cumin seeds): Another option is a jeera concoction, which is also cooling.
    • Ajwain (carom seeds): If you have indigestion or stomachache along with cold and cough, an ajwain concoction will be of quick help.

RESCUE FOODS

  • Curd Rice: The best opening and closing meal, regular intake will help those with acidity issues. Best comforting meal during excess heat, stomach pain, etc. Avoid in case of cold/ cough and fever.
  • In Fruits:
    • Papaya: known to encourage digestion. It contains two types of enzymes – papain and chymopapain – which have antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial properties. Moderate consumption is encouraged to avoid stomach cramps. Pregnant women are usually advised to avoid papaya.
    • Bananas: the best meal to start a meal for the day. Easiest to digest and provide quick energy, they have natural antacids that can help with indigestion. They also contain high potassium that increases mucus production in the stomach, healing any irritation in the stomach lining.
    • Apples: contain a type of fiber called pectin which neutralizes the acid and improves digestion.
    • Pomegranates: Beneficial during indigestion because they facilitate the secretion of enzymes to aid digestion.
  • Stay hydrated throughout the day as drinking water can provide relief by increasing the pH level of the stomach and diluting the acid.

WHAT TO AVOID?

  • Avoid eating outside food for at least 3-4 days even after your stomach has recovered, even packaged foods and junk food from known outlets contain preservatives and artificial flavors that are difficult to digest.
  • Do not consume fried, greasy and acidic foods (i.e. food with low PH levels, like meat, eggs, milk, coffee, etc).
